Jaap Bouhuijs was a versatile artist. He made monumental murals, mosaics, statues in bronze, wood and stone, and designs for stained-glass windows. He was also a gifted and original painter. His most common subjects are landscapes, figures and fishing life, for which he gained inspiration both at home and during trips to France, Italy and England. Bouhuijs received his training a.o. at the Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten, and the National Training Institute for Drawing Teachers in Amsterdam. Teachers included Huib Luns and Richard Roland Holst.
