In more than 50 shades of gray, Jacob Dooijewaard painted the view of the Elvehavn in Trondheim, Noordwegen. In the time of Dooijewaard it still snowed regularly in the Netherlands. That is becoming increasingly rare. The painter, who initially worked mainly in his hometown of Amsterdam, is known for his cityscapes and figures in an impressionist style reminiscent of Breitner's. From 1903 he lived in Laren, where he focused on the peasant interior. But he soon got a taste for traveling. He travels to Spain, France and America. Together with the American painter William Singer, who is the founder of the Singer Laren collection, who lives in Laren, he traveled to Norway many times.
