The lieutenant commander Jacob van Heemskerck van Beest chose the painting profession at the age of 25. He painted what was most dear to his heart: seascapes with ships and wrecks. He taught, among others, G.W. Dijsselhof and to his daughter, Jacoba van Heemskerck van Beest.
