Jacoba Laurillard, who later married the artist P.H. van Groningen, learned to paint from Jacob Hendrik Geerlings in Arnhem. Subsequently, she moved to Antwerp to take lessons at Henry Luyten's 'Institut des Beaux Arts', a private institution based at Luyten's country farm, where pupils came from all over the world to learn to paint outdoors. Luyten's influence is clear in Laurillard's deft, impressionistic depiction of landscapes and flower still lifes.
