Jan Boon's work is considered part of New Realism, a movement that manifested itself in Dutch painting from the mid-1920s. The painters who belonged to this movement strived for the most objective possible representation of reality. Beloved subjects of the painter and sculptor Boon were still lifes and flower arrangements, interspersed with nudes, landscapes and cityscapes. Characteristic of his work are the carefully constructed composition, with a lot of attention to the use of form and the color scheme.
