Romantic artist Jan Fabius lived and worked most of his life in Amsterdam. He was taught by the history painter J. W. Pieneman, and then specialized in painting portraits, genre paintings, peasant interiors with figures and, occasionally, a cityscape. He is said to have been a pastor, possibly because some of his paintings have a light religious slant. The Haags Gemeentemuseum owns the painter's work.
