Jan Frederik Schütz was born in 1817 in Middelburg into a family of seafarers. Initially he would also become a sailor, but thanks to his artistic aspirations he was admitted to the renowned Middelburg Drawing Academy in 1839. The marine painter Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek also received his training there. Schütz mainly painted and drew sea and river views. He also worked as a drawing and painting teacher and he had many admirers, especially in Zeeland. Both his sons, Willem Johannes and Jan Frederik Jr., inherited the artistic talent of their successful father.
