Born in Indonesia, Goedhart settled in Amsterdam in 1910, where he attended the Rijksacademie. He soon made a name for himself as a portrait painter and his first assignment in 1927 was to paint a portrait of Queen Wilhelmina. Contemporaries praise his work for the naturalness of composition and light and the beautiful painting of clothing and jewellery. In addition, he excels in painting still lifes, landscapes, interior pieces and especially sea and ships. Goedhart was one of the last Dutch marine painters to paint ship portraits for the major liner shipping companies. From 1951 he also traveled with naval ships.
