Jan Holtrup moved with his family to Hilversum at a young age, worked in his parents' shop after the Lyceum and decided to become a painter when he was 26. He was taught by the landscape painter J.F.C. Scherrewitz, whose work was strongly influenced by the Hague School. Holtrup's preferred subject matter was the countryside in the Veluwe, Gooi and Brabant regions. His style remained close to that of his teacher, although more subdued, occasionally verging on romantic. In the 1960s he moved his area of work to Oosterbeek and the surrounding area. Holtrup also painted landscapes in Germany and Austria.
