Jan Jurriën Moolhuizen mainly looked for inspiration in nature for his painting. Flowers, French and Dutch landscapes, birds, still lifes and people were popular subjects. After 1964, fantasy performances were also created, often with bird motifs. His style has been described as 'sensitive realism'. Moolhuizen was educated at the Evening Drawing School in Amsterdam and was also a student of Willem Schumacher. He lived and worked in Ermelo and often painted in Egmond in the summer. From 1946 he made trips in all parts of France in the spring and late summer. Moolhuizen was a member of several artists' associations, including 'Arti et Amicitiae' and 'St. Lucas' in Amsterdam.
