Jan Simon Knikker Sr. was one of the painters who continued the loose brushwork of the Hague Schoolers and their preference for the atmospheric representation of nature in the 20th century. He is therefore, like his son Jan Knikker Jr., considered one of the 'post-flowering' of the Hague School. The painter was self-taught and was taught by his older brother Aris Knikker. His work differs from that of his brother by the broader brushstroke and a more colorful palette. Knikker Sr. mainly painted waterscapes, landscapes and cityscapes. He lived and worked in Hillegom and Leiden and from 1914 in The Hague. His work in the style of the Hague School was highly sought after abroad. His son, Jan Simon Knikker Jr., followed in his footsteps and together they sold their work through the art dealer.
