The Hague painter Jan Schreuder van Coolwijk was a student at the academies of Antwerp, Paris and Munich, which is clearly reflected in his choice of subjects and style. He painted landscapes for a short time, but then devoted himself almost entirely to painting joyous women, nudes and portraits. His interiors with elegant young women, lost in thought or engrossed in small, daily activities, were particularly successful. His style can best be described as a strongly romantic impressionism in which warm, sparkling colours predominate.
