Jan Strube is considered a New Realist painter. Active in Breda, he painted carefully chosen subjects from his immediate surroundings: sun-drenched views of the Brabant landscape, houses, genre scenes of cattle markets or bakers at work and still lifes, always rendered with great precision and realism. In spite of their at times mysterious and otherworldly, uniform light, the signature undercurrent of humour in his works gives them a cheerful quality.
