The Haarlem painter Jan Visser mainly painted flowers and seascapes. He was a student at the Haarlem School of Applied Arts (1891-1893) and was also taught drawing and painting by director E. von Saher. He then joined Joh. Enschedé where he was trained as a wood engraver. From 1912 he devoted himself exclusively to painting. He often chose begonias as subjects for his flower still lifes, with their bright red, pink and orange. Some of his still lifes were compared with those of Mankes for their 'internalisation' by critic A. Plasschaert.
