Jan Weissenbruch was one of the key exponents of realism in Dutch landscape painting in the 1850s and 60s. He studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, and afterwards concentrated specifically on painting scenes from street life in the Netherlands’ old cities, and in towns situated on the major rivers. Although Weissenbruch’s work is rooted in the romantic tradition, he is gradually moving away from this style, favouring a more impressionistic approach. He has an eye for light and atmosphere, aspects that were further developed by the artists of the Hague School.
