Jan Wiegers is one of the best known Dutch Expressionists and a founding member of the Groningen Ploeg group. Of all the painters who were members, he was the most internationally inclined. During a stay in Davos, Switzerland, from 1920 to 1922, he met the German Expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Thereafter his work was characterised by vibrant colours, with a free, yet powerful handling of line and form. Wiegers’s oeuvre had a huge variety of motifs, including his Swiss subject matter, Groningen landscapes, nudes, still lifes, interiors and portraits. He also produced etchings and woodcuts.
