Wittenberg was a pupil of Floris Arntzenius and attended The Hague Academy of Art. In the nineteen twenties and thirties he made finely painted, restrained still lifes, heads of children and animals plus the occasional landscape. His still lifes comprise simple everyday objects, mainly seen from above and placed against a bluish black or grimy white background. In its simplicity and execution, the work is very similar to that of Jan Mankes. Wittenberg also made many prints and woodcuts. His painted work is very rare.
