Jo Bauer-Stumpff belonged to the group of Amsterdam Joffers, together with other women painters like Coba Ritsema, Lizzy Ansingh and Marie van Regteren Altena. With robust brushstrokes, she painted still lifes in pure, balanced colours and portraits of men and women from her circle. Her oeuvre is relatively small. After her marriage to Marius Bauer in 1902 she gave up painting, and only picked it up again at the age of sixty.
