An important Frisian impressionist, painter and watercolorist of figures, landscapes, cityscapes and flowers. Johannes Elsinga trained as a painter at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam, under the direction of Nicolaas van der Waay. He also took lessons at the academy in The Hague. His work was already distinguished during his training: from 1917 to 1920 he received a royal subsidy and twice he received a premium linked to the Willink van Collen Prize. From 1921 he lived again in his birthplace Leeuwarden; Elsinga made many painting trips to North Africa, Spain, France, Switzerland and England. Elsinga is considered to be an after-bloomer of the Hague School. His colour is warmer, however, with the use of many earth colours and deep reds for keys and accents.
