Johan Scherrewitz is associated with the late flowering of the Hague School. He was born in Amsterdam in 1868 and was a pupil of the landscape painter Geo Poggenbeek. He moved to the Dutch Gooi region in 1898. Scherrewitz loved painting open woodland views, a subject he alternated with beach scenes in Katwijk. His paintings are populated by cows, sheep, horses, fishermen and their boats and shellfish harvesters with their horses and carriages. Scherrewitz was virtually an overnight success in England, Scotland and the United States.
