The artist Johanna Pieneman came from an old Amsterdam artist family. Between 1910 and 1969 she was successful with Impressionist-style landscapes, flowers, and a single cityscape. Her oeuvre also includes pastel drawings of birds, which she studied in the aviaries of Artis. The painter received her training at the Day Drawing and Art Craft School for girls before she was admitted to the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam.
