J.J. Mittertreiner was a painter of romantic village and city views in the style of Cornelis Springer, and of landscapes with buildings. Mittertreiner lived and worked almost his whole life in Amsterdam. It can be deduced from his work that he had also sought inspiration elsewhere in the country. For example, he painted the small towns around the Zuiderzee (Enkhuizen, Hoorn). Mittertreiner submitted his work in the period 1871-1882 for the annual ‘Exhibition of Living Masters’.
