Johannes Rutten made a name for himself as a painter and draftsman of accurately elaborated, topographically correct cityscapes and church interiors. His birthplace Dordrecht was his main source of inspiration: Rutten has captured all parts of the city in more than 800 drawings and watercoloors. But also iconic locations in other Dutch cities, and occasionally even in a foreign place, were immortalized by him. Rutten was taught by the well-known Abraham van Strij (1753-1826), his brother-in-law and descendant of an extensive and renowned Dordrecht family of painters. Johannes Rutten was a draftsman at the Pictura Drawing Society in Dordrecht.
