After his school days, Jos Tilleux worked for a short time as a technical draftsman, but soon opted for free painting. After an apprenticeship at the academy in Antwerp, he settled in the picturesque Flemish artists' village of Lier, where he gathered material for countless village scenes. His oeuvre is characterized by a wide variety of subjects: portraits, still lifes, church interiors were alternated with river views on the Scheldt and images of the Flemish landscape. The initially dark colour scheme made way for pure, light colours around 1935. Tilleux also traveled in Italy, France and the Netherlands resulting in countless paintings. Museums: including the Royal Academy of Antwerp.
