Josephina Hendrickx was born in Antwerp in 1885. There she was taught by the Flemish painter Gerard Jacobs (1865-1957), whom she later married. After a stay in Paris she emigrated to Veere at the start of the First World War and from 1945 she lived in Vlissingen. There, together with Jacobs, she was co-founder and an inspiring member of the art circle 'Het Zuiden', the cradle of 'Scheldt luminism'. The bathing pavilion 'Juliana' on the boulevard Evertsen would be the center of the art circle from 1920 to 1942. Major exhibitions were organized every three years, with the participation of painters from Zeeland, Brabant and Limburg.
