The French painter Jules Worms is a representative of the popular 'Spanish genre' in the 19th century. After a trip to Spain around 1860, he became impressed by the exotic culture of this southern country. He would return there regularly afterwards to find inspiration. Worms is a storyteller in his paintings. He depicts everyday life with its deeply rooted customs, its bullfighters, gypsies and musicians in their colourful clothing and costumes. In addition, he often provides a humorous commentary on the courtship of his time. Worms won many prizes for his work and was appointed a member of the Légion d'honneur in 1876.
