The Hague painter of landscapes and marines Kees van Waning experienced an interesting development. He was trained by the rather traditional working painter of cityscapes Carel Behr. Willem Maris, however, advised him to paint outside, a counsel he immediately followed. Together with Evert Akkeringa he moved into a studio in Loosduinen, where Breitner and Willem de Zwart also moved in 1886. His work in that period included mainly dune landscapes and beach scenes. Then, until 1898, he shared a studio at the Spui with Floris Arntzenius. From this period he painted many river views around The Hague, Amsterdam and Rotterdam, which became famous for their skies.
