Lion Schulman worked in Hilversum, Amersfoort and Amsterdam. In 1870 he was apprenticed to the animal painter Jan de Rijk, later Schulman specialized under Jan H.B. Koekkoek in landscape painting. Schulman mainly painted tree-filled landscapes in a romantic style, in which an impulse to impressionism can be discerned. Together with Jan H.B. he traveled to London, where he also worked for some time. He sold the landscapes he made in that period through the London art dealership of Jan H.B.'s brother, Hermanus Jr. Schulman would later work with Hermanus Jr. in Gelderland. Together with his son David, Schulman had an art dealership annex painter's shop in Laren.
