Ludwig Andreas Letsch was born in Wolfurth (Austria) in 1856 and learned to paint from, among others, Gebhard Flatz in Bregenz. After his apprenticeship in Bregenz, Letsch left for Paris around 1878. In Paris he went to study at the École académique and was apprenticed to Pierre Dupuis. Letsch probably painted this flower still life in that period. Dupuis was praised for his flower still lifes, a theme that apparently also appealed to Letsch as he has started to specialize in it. In 1889 he started working in Mulhouse, a town in the Alsace region. There he founded the artist group 'Palet'. The Austrian painter died in Strasbourg at the age of 84.
