The painter Lucie van Dam van Isselt already showed a great talent for drawing at a young age. She visited the Hague Academy from 1891 and settled in Veere in Walcheren in 1907, where she soon came under the spell of the bright, Zeeland light. In that period she started painting flowers and very personal, subdued still lifes: little gems that were permeated with a pearling, silvery tone. Probably her preference for bright grays and whites, occasionally alternated with a still life against a dark background, was influenced by her painter friend Walter Vaes. The painter also made travel impressions and portraits.
