The painting ladies Mies Elout-Drabbe and Lucie van Dam van Isselt were both not originally from Zeeland. Yet it was precisely there that their artistic talent flourished. Perhaps it was due to the bright light on Walcheren, or it was due to the intensive contact with other artists who moved to Domburg in the summer months. The Domburg Summer Exhibitions played an important role in this, the first of which was organized in 1911. Both Mies and the slightly older Lucie submitted work. Mies Elout-Drabbe had already moved with her parents to Domburg in 1895, where luminism made its appearance under the influence of Jan Toorop. Until 1912 she pointed landscapes and village scenes, mostly in oil paint and colored pencil. Critics praised the way her technique allowed her to paint the peculiar light filtering of a gray day. Lucie van Dam van Isselt came to visit her family in Domburg from an early age; Lucie's mother was a sister of Mies's father. After a divorce, Lucie van Dam van Isselt moved from Renkum to Veere for good in 1907. There she devoted herself to painting flowers and refined still lifes in which a clear light and brittle white often predominate.
