Provenance: part. bezit België.

Marcel Pire was educated at the Brussels academy. This was followed by trips to Norway, Sweden, Spain and Morocco. In 1951 the painter left for a big trip to West Africa and lived for 8 years in the province of Katanga in the Belgian Congo. During this period he painted African everyday life in market scenes and landscapes. After his return, he made plans to return to Congo in 1960, but political circumstances forced him to stay in Belgium. In addition to his market scenes, Pire became internationally known for exuberant floral still lifes and compositions with flowers, fruit and game.
