Marinus Albertus Kiewiet was originally a house painter and, as often happened in the early 19th century, made the transition from craftsman to free artist. He initially lived and worked in The Hague, after 1851 in Leiden. His oeuvre consists of finely elaborated summer and winter landscapes and forest and dune views, decorated with farmers, fishermen and rural folk.
