The Amsterdam Mattheus Eliza Perné was a merchant by trade and had mastered the art of painting herself. The landscape was the main source of inspiration for his work. Perné lived and worked mainly in the capital, but stayed in Amersfoort around 1838 and in Rhenen four years later. Judging by this painting, he also worked in the Arnhem area, perhaps during his 'Rhenense period'.
