The English painter Maurice Randall must have been very fond of travelling. In addition to elegant young women and still lifes, he painted scenes from everyday life while traveling through Africa, and he also visited Holland around the turn of the century. There he painted, among other things, the picturesque fishing village of Volendam, which enjoyed great popularity after Henry Havard's travel report 'La Hollande Pittoresque'. From 1873, numerous foreign painters visited the village to paint the fishermen in their characteristic costumes, the harbour and interiors.
