This painting by Emile Jean Ghislain van Gindertael (1906-1993), better known by his pseudonym Milo, most likely is from his early period. From the 1930s onward, the artist's oeuvre reflects an evolution from subtle impressionism to pure abstraction. Influenced by French cubism, initially he proceeded to simplify shapes in still lifes and interiors. From the 1950s onward, the representation of reality was completely abandoned. Meanwhile, he also continued to paint dynamic impressionistic interiors and cityscapes. Van Gindertael was one of the founders of La Jeune Peinture Belge (1946) and Art Abstrait (1952).
