Nico Cevat is trained as a decorative painter in a Limburg shelter, where he lives for a while after the death of his father in Amsterdam. After his return to Amsterdam, in 1907 he started working as a set painter for Theater Bellevue, at that time the center of Amsterdam's entertainment life. Somewhere around 1909 he also takes lessons from Simon Maris and develops a style akin to that of the Hague School. Cevat then paints atmospheric summer and winter landscapes, harbor and town views, genre paintings and still lifes in subdued colours. In the meantime he worked as a restorer at the Stedelijk Museum in Haarlem (later the Frans Hals Museum) and from 1911 to 1913 at the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Cologne. After a year in New York, he returns to Amsterdam to focus on the art trade and restoration profession. He also made free work in his studio at home until a few years before his death in 1955.
