After training to become a publisher, Otto Dill studied painting at the Munich Academy from 1908 to 1914 with Heinrich von Zügel. There he found the subject in which he would excel: predators, horses and depictions of hunting and equestrian sports. During his lifetime, Dill was already a famous animal painter, who proved to be able to capture the essence of 'his' animals with a few striking brushstrokes. During many travels through North Africa, Italy, France and Spain, he painted not only animals but also village scenes and landscapes. The latter genre also kept him busy after his move, in 1930, to rural Neustadt. There, the collector Manfred Vetter would later establish the Otto Dill Museum dedicated to his work.
