Otto Pippel is counted among the most important impressionists in southern Germany. Born in Poland as the son of German parents Pippel visited the academy in Dresden, where he received lessons from the renowned genre painter Gotthard Kuehl. After a visit to Paris in 1909 and acquaintance with the work of the French impressionists, the artist found his definitive style. From his residence Planegg near Munich he created a rich, impressionistic oeuvre that includes landscapes, still lifes and cityscapes. Striking are the city genre pieces by Pippel, for which he found inspiration in the fashionable Hofgarten, Englischer Garten and Hirschgarten in Munich.
