Paul Permeke was the youngest son of the important Flemish expressionist Constant Permeke. Paul was self-taught, and painted scenes such as farming villages, caravans and fairground scenes in which he combined impressionism and expressionism. Later, after a stay in Spain and Portugal, his palette became lighter and brighter in colour. In the period after 1960, this Permeke lived in Westkapelle in Zeeland, where he found inspiration in the polders with their moving cloudy skies. In addition, he also continued to paint people: the farmer, the fisherman, the vagabond.
