The Frisian painter-poet Pier Feddema was mainly self-taught. In the 1950s, together with Jan Frearks van der Bij, Klaas Koopmans and Sjoerd Huizinga, he formed the expressionist painting group 'Yn 'e Line', founded after the example of the Groninger Ploeg. Their subjects were Frisian country life and biblical motifs. Feddema was also a great admirer of Gerrit Benner, although he prefers dark colours. His work is characterized by a generous use of the palette knife and heavy, sometimes fist-thick contours.
