Piet van Boxel is a 20th-century impressionist. His oeuvre shows a predilection for the 'opened up' country, such as the Zuidhollandse lakes and the beach area around The Hague and Rotterdam, which parallels his passion for early light. He received his education at the academy of Rotterdam, where the lessons of the impressionist and Breitner student J.G. Heijberg were important for his artistic development. Although Van Boxel regularly made study trips to sunny Spain and the south of France, his work is nevertheless characterized by the muted Dutch colours and gray light. Besides landscapes, he also painted still lifes and he was a gifted painter of cityscapes.
