Pieter Defesche is one of the Limburg artists living in Amsterdam in the nineteen fifties who felt an affinity with the expressionism of Cobra. Based on this, he evolved a dynamic, colourful and increasingly more abstract painting style in which landscape is a dominating influence. Besides painting, he made monumental murals and designed sets and costumes. Defesche also taught at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht.
