The artist Rebecca van Gelder has been underexposed for a long time. With the exhibition 'Rebel, my heart' (1995) her work - she painted, was a graphic artist and fashion illustrator - again came to the attention of the general public. Van Gelder, who also exhibited under the names 'Bobette' or 'Bob Stratthon van Gelder', lived most of her life in Amsterdam. She studied in Berlin, London and Paris. At first she earned her income by making fashion illustrations, later she made free work, which she regularly exhibited at the exhibitions of 'De Onafhankelijken'. Portraits, still lifes and figure pieces form the biggest part of her oeuvre, often depictions with a satirical or social-critical undertone.
