Reimond Kimpe was born in Ghent. After the First World War he fled to Middelburg, where he lived for the rest of his life. Initially he worked as an engineer. At the age of 40 he decided to become an artist. At first he mainly painted Zeeland landscapes, sea and ships. After 1929, human figures and their mutual relationship were central to his work. His paintings are strongly expressionistic, in which colour and symbolism are the means of expression. He was also known for his stained glass windows.
