The Fleming Richard Baseleer was an impressionist with a great preference for 'en plein air' painting. His depictions of the port of Antwerp, the Lower Scheldt and the Dutch and Flemish beaches have become a household name among collectors because of their striking atmosphere and spacious skies. Baseleer was educated at the then famous Antwerp academy and was a great admirer of the Dutch masters Jan van Goyen and Jacob Maris. He traveled extensively, including to the Netherlands, and spent a long time in Egypt and Venice, where he devoted himself to painting cityscapes and figures.
