Painter of Dutch church interiors, portraits and genre pieces. Initially he was going to be an engineer, but at the age of 22, Richard Bisschop chose painting anyway. He received his education at the academy in Rotterdam. He also received advice from his uncle, the genre painter Christoffel Bisschop. In 1891 he married the painter Suze Robertson.
