In addition to a number of private figure drawing lessons, Roy Nockolds taught himself how to paint. In the 1920s he started to create depictions of cars and motorcycles and provided illustrations for magazines in this field. Although he is best known for this, Nockolds was in fact a versatile painter, whose oeuvre includes marines, landscapes, portraits and scenes with dogs. During the Second World War he worked for the British Ministry of Information, was in the service of the Royal Air Force and became an official War Artist. Nockolds exhibited regularly, including at London's Royal Academy exhibitions, and became President of the Guild of Aviation Artists in 1975.
