Man is the central theme in the work of the German artist Siegfried Neuenhausen. The term 'critical realism' is often mentioned in connection with his paintings and sculptures. Neuenhausen was educated at the academy in Düsseldorf (1952-'59) and was a teacher at the Hochschule für bildende Künste in Braunschweig from 1964 to 1995. From a socially critical attitude, Neuenhausen portrays the relationships between people in a confrontational or subtle way: political or personal balances of power, or love ties and friendships. Initially he made man-sized sculptures, later small sculptures, which, however, have the same great expressiveness.
