The Belgian painter Victor Ravet painted the life of the petit bourgeoisie in narrative, finely elaborated genre pieces. He knew the life of this social class, because he came from there himself. Simple workmen and washerwomen were also a popular subject. Ravet received painting lessons from Jean-François Portaels, who had made a name for himself with romanticized history paintings, religious scenes, portraits and genre scenes. From 1845 Ravet regularly exhibited his work at exhibitions, including at the Salons in Brussels and Ghent.
